Understanding the Tainan Public Library

在台南圖書館中長期的發展計劃中,為了均衡發展各學科、年齡與館藏特色,台南市政府每年積極與中央爭取採購經費,期望111年前市民擁書率達到每人2.3冊。

In the Tainan Library's development plan, the local government actively seeks funding from the central government to increase the diversity of the books collection, aiming to increase the book ownership rate to 2.3 volumes per person by 2022.

Added the book saving feature; readers can use this as the personal reading list, connecting to their life.

Clear Guidence

凸顯重點訊息,簡化操作步驟,使熟悉服務的用戶能快速完成;提供適當的提示,幫助新手能夠快速理解服務。

Emphasized the primary info and simplified the reserving steps, making users finish tasks quickly and showing the appropriate tips for the rookie to understand how the service is going.

Flexible use

在我的頁面及書房皆可快速確認書籍狀態。新增個人頁面讓用戶能夠確認帳戶狀態及相關服務。

Quickly check your book status on my book page or account page. Added an account page to let users easily check their status and get service.

2. Interactive Clickable Prototypes in Figma

Challenge

We can reserve a book from all of Tainan's libraries through this app. Is anyone willing to check out a book that needs to wait longer? The old design had unclear information classification that users had to spend more time finding the info. The challenge was classifying the essential news and giving the users a smooth and quicker reserve service.

透過台南市立圖書館的app,能預約所有分館的書籍。有任何人願意預約到需要等待比較久時間的書籍嗎?在舊版本的設計中,資訊的層級並沒有被劃分清楚,使用者需要花較多時間找到資訊。這次的挑戰在於如何適當分級必要信息,給予使用者更流暢且快速的預約體驗。

Outcome

The outcome is an optimized book reservation app. I conducted it from user research and information structure to a high-fidelity prototype and user testing. 

優化書籍預約體驗是專案的主要產出。我執行從用戶研究、資訊架構到操作測試及高保真原型。

為使預約流程更加順暢,除了預約功能流程的主要設計,同時也整合相關連動資訊,讓使用體驗更加完善。

To make the reserving service more smooth, I also integrate related info, improving the user experience.

Current version and new Redesign

在左方原始的介面中,由於資訊未被妥善的分級及分組,使用者在閱讀資訊時需花上更多時間了解內容;流程的規劃及說明提示未充分提供資訊,導致使用者不確定自己執行的步驟是否成功。右方是透過此次的優化產出,接下來將展示出設計過程與脈絡。

On the left is the current version of the app. The information isn't classified well in the original interface, so users need to take more time to understand the content. And the notices are not apparent during the flow that users are not sure whether the action is successful.

Problem statement

在行動裝置普及下,圖書館也已規劃提供行動智慧服務,讓市民能透過行動載具進行借閱服務。

為了使採購經費能夠提升,我們要如何改善功能更好且更具吸引力的行動服務,促使市民讀者願意透過他們偏好的行動裝置,提高圖書的借閱率?

Considering the popularity of mobile devices, libraries have also launched mobile apps so that the public can access services on the move.
To increase local funding for diverse books collection, how might we improve the mobile service so citizens would want to use the app and borrow more books?

How might we increase the rates of book borrowing?

如何使台南市的讀者多加利用預約取書的功能,成功實現節省找書與取書的通勤時間,進而達成提高圖書的借閱率。

Readers in Tainan will use the service more often to check out books, saving them time searching for books and commuting for pickup, increasing borrowing rates.

Scoping and Setting requirements

界定專案範疇,首先透過訪談了解用戶觀點,發掘持續使用app的動機,進而發展需新增及優化的功能。

The first step in scoping the project is understanding the user's perspective to find out why they would like to keep using it. And the next step, I came out with the functions ideas that need to optimize.

Set primary persona

透過勞動部的資料顯示,發現台南在近五年來,雖然在戶政人口上並沒有太多上升趨勢,但工作人口正在持續上升,可以得知外縣市來到台南工作的人正在增加當中。而圖書館的服務是提供給所有人都能使用的,於是鎖定從“外地來台南工作,並長期在當地生活的上班族”作為基礎切入點,會是除了當地市民外,增加借閱率的機會點。

Through the data from the labor affairs bureau, we can find out that the general population didn't grow much, but more people came to work in Tainan. And everyone can access the library service, so I target the characters who came to Tainan for the job and take long-stay here, which might be an excellent point to increase the book borrowing rate in addition to focusing on the citizens.
